  81.    Galileo is fast approaching its first Earth flyby.  If the
  82. Sun-Earth-Galileo geometry is right, it should be possible to
  83. observe the spacecraft.  Somewhere on Earth, that geometry
  84. should be right.  If Galileo is not quite bright enough to
  85. observe directly, it probably can be photographed.  As the first
  86. spacecraft that mankind has sent to another planet and returned so
  87. close to the Earth, Galileo should not "pass un-noticed in the
  88. night".  Unfortunately, I have been unable to obtain any info
  89. about its present orbit or near Earth trajectory.  Is there anyone
  90. who could provide heliocentric orbital elements, or better still
  91. some details of its actual flyby path?

  118.      The health of the Galileo spacecraft continues to be excellent.  The
  119. TCM-8 (Trajectory Correction Maneuver 8) sequence memory load was successfully
  120. completed; the maneuver sequence is presently in process.  Yesterday, the
  121. spacecraft successfully completed the planned SSI (Solid State Imaging) and
  122. NIMS (Near Infrared Mapping Spectrometer) photometric calibration activities.
  123. Later today, following TCM-8 execution, the spacecraft will perform a
  124. schedule turn to lead the sun.  The Venus images taken by Galileo last
  125. February and played back last week, are presently being displayed on the TV
  126. monitors at JPL.

  148. Some of the "science fact" in Analog is just a tad speculative IMHO,
  149. and some engineering solutions a touch kludgy. (Not everybody with
  150. a PhD knows what they are doing.)

  152. In this particular case, refuelling would only help if the main engines
  153. were restartable, and I don't think they are (not even close, considering
  154. the considerable effort in refurbishing them for the next flight). And then
  155. you would be lugging all this mass (wings and such) out to the moon where
  156. it's not really useful. If you're going to use the shuttle at all, should it
  157. not be easier to just fuel up the 'LEM-like' craft in LEO and send it on?

  222. The conclusion of the Atlantis STS-38 mission is scheduled for 4:48 pm
  223. EST this afternoon at Edwards Air Force Base.  However, the weather is
  224. a bit questionable, but conditions do not rule out landing on the first
  225. deorbit opportunity at 4:48 pm.  The problem is a front is moving in,
  226. which is expected to cause some crosswind.  The weather picture is
  227. expected to worsen later.  The STS-38 solid rocket boosters were
  228. returned to Hangar AF this weekend, and initial inspection showed them
  229. to be in good condition.

  231. At the Kennedy Space Center, the first part of ordnance operations on
  232. Columbia was begun yesterday.  Launch pad 39-B was cleared during this
  233. operation.  The onboard mass memory units are being loaded with mission
  234. software today.  Payload operations today include argon servicing on
  235. the Broad Band X-ray Telescope and loading of fresh film into the
  236. Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope.  The two contingency space suits are
  237. scheduled to be installed in the air lock early this week.  A launch
  238. date will be set for Columbia and its STS-35 Astro-1 mission at the
  239. Flight Readiness Review, Tuesday, Nov. 27, at KSC.

  241. In Orbiter Processing Facility Bay 1, Discovery's turnaround processing
  242. continues.  Last Friday, five new general purpose computers were
  243. installed.  STS-39, Discovery's planned February 1991, flight will be
  244. the first to use these new IBM AP- 101S computers.  The upgraded GPCs
  245. provide 2.5 times the existing memory capacity and up to three times
  246. the existing processor speed with minimum impact on flight software.
  247. They are half the size, weigh approximately half as much, and require
  248. less power to operate.

  266. Johnson Space Center will take delivery of the second Shuttle Carrier
  267. Aircraft at Boeing Military Airplanes, Wichita, Kan., tomorrow, Nov.
  268. 20.  Following delivery ceremonies in Wichita, the SCA will be flown to
  269. Ellington Field, near JSC, for a 1:30 p.m. EST ceremony.  News media
  270. have been invited for the ceremony and a tour of the aircraft with
  271. flight crew members.  The SCA is a modified Boeing 747-100SR aircraft.
  272. It is powered by four Pratt & Whitney JT9D-7J engines.  Some features
  273. which distinguish this aircraft from a standard Boeing 747 are the
  274. struts protruding from the top of the fuselage and the two additional
  275. vertical stabilizers.  The modified 747 has a range of about 1,160
  276. miles with an orbiter atop it.

  333. I don't think there is any hope that such a system would pay for itself
  334. at one payload per day.  If you want to launch only a thousand kilos per
  335. day, you are much better off building a smaller launcher (which can run
  336. off more mundane power supplies) and using rockets for the crew.  The
  337. big economy of a laser launcher is that it can send up a payload every
  338. few minutes; using it once a day is a huge waste of capital investment.

  354. (Trajectory Correction Maneuver 8) , imparting the required delta velocity just
  355. over 5 cm/sec.  Also yesterday, subsequent to the maneuver, the spacecraft
  356. completed a 6 degree turn to lead the sun by 9 degrees.  Today, selected remote
  357. sensing science will perform continued planned calibration activities including
  358. boresight and star calibrations.
